This takes place in a special organ in their abdomen, where a reaction occurs between a substance called luciferin, an enzyme called luciferase, oxygen, and energy molecules (ATP). The outcome is what scientists call \u201ccold light\u201d \u2014 light that shines without giving off heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the glow isn\u2019t just for show. <strong>Fireflies<\/strong> use their light for different reasons: to communicate, to attract a mate, and even to keep predators at bay. That sparkle can work as a warning signal, hinting that they\u2019re either unappetising or even toxic.
